About Pastoring the City

Pastoring the City brings together spiritual leaders to serve Newport News In 2021, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church parishioners and clergy participated in the Juneteenth “Still Walking for Racial Justice” event in Hampton. The event was organized by the Hampton Faith Walk Community, a group of Hampton clergy that work together to address multiple challenges in their city. The Rev. Anne Kirchmier, rector of St. Andrew's, had the privilege of attending some of their meetings last spring and was so inspired by their ministry that she wanted to see if something similar could be done in Newport News, with a focus on addressing the many needs in our own city. Thus, Pastoring the City (PTC) was born. In less than a year, it has become an ecumenical and racially diverse team of about 40 spiritual leaders that care deeply about their community and want to expand and deepen relationships with each other so that they can serve the people of Newport News more effectively. The group is already making a difference. PTC members participated in the prayer vigil following the shooting at Heritage High School and in a special Shabbat service held by Temple Sinai following the hostage situation at the synagogue in Colleyville, TX. PTC members will be presenting a panel discussion, “God and Criminal Justice”, at the Hampton Roads Social Justice Conference at CNU in April 2022.
